Yoga Retreat, Turkey Summer 2025

I’m delighted to invite you to an enchanting week in June 2025, in the serene beauty of the Dalyan River in Turkey. This pristine river, with its gentle brackish waters, flows gracefully through unspoiled wetlands, just a short water-taxi ride away from the breathtaking Iztuzu Beach – a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its nesting loggerhead turtles.
Dates:
21 June – 28 June 2025

We’ll be staying at the friendly, family-run Likya Pension, which offers comfortable twin or double rooms, each with a private bathroom. Located right on the Dalyan River, the pension has a platform for swimming and sunbathing, a small bar, and a courtyard with chairs for relaxing or reading. It’s just a five-minute walk to a nearby corner shop and a ten-minute walk to the center of Dalyan, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and shops.
You’ll have plenty of time to immerse yourself in the surrounding beauty, whether by exploring the nearby wetlands, visiting the ancient archaeological site of Kaunos with its well-preserved ruins, or discovering other local attractions. For those interested in adventure, bikes are available for hire, offering a wonderful way to fully explore the scenic paths and hidden gems of the area. Of course, you may also choose to simply unwind with a good book, enjoy the tranquility of the river, or spend lazy afternoons soaking up the sun at the pristine beach.
Ahmet, the owner of Likya, also runs award-winning boat tours and will personally host us on two special cruises. The first is a sunset trip upstream to the lake, with visits to thermal springs, a mud bath, and then a stop at the beach to watch the sunset. Accommodation at Holland House includes 27 bedrooms, meeting rooms, a chapel, and gardens – space and refreshment for individuals and groups. The oldest part of the house dates from the early seventeenth century. Here you find a comfortable reception area, library room, drawing room, and a beamed dining room with an inglenook fireplace. Upstairs, they have a selection of mostly twin bedrooms and prayer and study rooms. The ‘library loft’ bedroom has a small sitting area, perfect for retreat leaders or those engaged in study or one-to-one meetings.
The modern block includes 18 bedrooms. This block includes a purpose-built room for people with reduced mobility or using a wheelchair. The ‘Anthony Gell suite’ includes twin beds and a modern wet room. It is situated on the ground floor. On the other side of the old house, there is a lovely chapel with a large clear window behind the Altar looking out across the gardens toward the ancient Cedar of Lebanon.
Holland House has three acres of beautiful well-maintained gardens sloping down to the River Avon. With many quiet spaces and private spots for relaxation and reflection, there is much interest to be found in the garden which is naturally divided between formal and natural areas. Paths lead down to the riverside and the landing stage for the Holland House rowing boat. Formal areas of the garden include well-maintained lawns, one of which is often used for croquet during the summer months, and deep colorful borders planted in the original Georgian style.
A recently redesigned rose garden dedicated to The Friends of Holland House contains 120 roses and is under-planted with natural annuals such as fox-glove, nigella, and Verbascum, the beds being bordered by lavender, box, and alchemilla Mollis. This beautiful garden is at its best during June and July and can be found opposite the chapel behind an historic yew hedge that has unusual ‘windows’ cut into it to let in light. Just outside the reception entrance, there is a remarkable sunken garden now filled with culinary and medicinal herbs.
This is in the Sir Edwin Lutyens style and is reputed to have been designed by him. Sir Edwin is described as surely the greatest British architect of the twentieth (or of any other) century and went on to design the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, and the city of New Deli in India. It also has a lovely labyrinth made from fallen branches and other natural objects found in the garden. This has become a special place for many, and guests can often be seen tracing its gentle and mysterious paths as they walk slowly around it.
Holland House’s garden is home to many interesting species of plants and animals, including a descendant of the pre-historic Ginkgo tree and Wollemi Pine. There is also a mature walnut tree and Atlantic and Lebanon cedars. Down by the river, you may spot kingfishers or the white-legged damselfly (platycnemis pennipes) and also hear green and greater spotted woodpeckers. In the evening, tawny owls can also be seen around the gardens. Dr. Paul Smith, professor of Botany, completed a natural history of the gardens and said that “such houses have a vital role to play in the future conservation of wildlife”.

FOOD
During this retreat, you will be served three locally sourced vegetarian meals and snacks every day included in the price. Holland House has two fine chefs dedicated to providing the best meals for guests. They understand that the best hospitality starts in the kitchen, and to that end, they work hard to provide top-quality meals made with care and attention.
They also have an ethos of buying as much local produce, some home-grown, free-range, organic, and MSC-sourced fish whenever possible and practical. British Farm Standard is their minimum requirement. Holland House provides a wide variety of health-related variations to all the meals, including gluten-free cake vegetarian, pescatarian, or vegan meals.
The ethos of Holland House is that they have a dining room (not a restaurant) and that you eat the same meal together as you would at home – hopefully achieving a sense of being together in a welcoming home, rather than a hotel or restaurant. Holland House works hard to cut down on waste and only cooks to order. Homemade jams and pickles from the kitchen are available to take home after your stay and during the summer months.
